Lacquerware has significantly marked Asian cultures Far Eastern cultures for thousands of years. With its distinctive signature colors, namely dark black and crimson red, the Urushi lacquerware particularly stands out through exquisite inlays crafted in Japan, China, Korea and Southeast Asia. Its texture and glance have been praised worldwide and inspired contemporary designers in major fields. Among the many skills surrounding the extraction of Urushi vegetal sap and its transformation, the Japanese artists have been holding a predominant rank for centuries, sparking European collectors’ interest. L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts, partners with The Liang Yi Museum and invites the audience to unlock the meanings and process behind this intricate craft through a one-hour conversation followed by a view of Japanese lacquer pieces from Liang Yi Museum Collection “The Other Japan: Beyond Kimonos and Swords”.
